Data transmission
Syllabus 2.1.4Syllabus 2.1.5
What this lesson covers
- Describe serial, parallel, simplex, half-duplex and full-duplex transmission
- Choose a suitable method for a scenario
Key vocabulary
- Data transmission
- Transferring data from one point to another.
- Bandwidth
- The amount of data that can be transmitted at one time, usually in bits per second.
- Serial transmission
- Data is sent one bit at a time over a single wire.
- Parallel transmission
- Several bits are sent at the same time over several wires.
- Skew
- When bits sent in parallel arrive at different times because each wire has slightly different properties.
- Crosstalk
- Electrical interference between wires that are close together, causing errors.
- Simplex
- Data travels in one direction only.
- Half-duplex
- Data travels in both directions, but only one way at a time.
- Full-duplex
- Data travels in both directions at the same time.
