Sound
Syllabus 1.2.2
What this lesson covers
- Explain how and why sound is stored, including the effect of sample rate and sample resolution
Key vocabulary
- Analogue
- A continuous signal that can take any value, like real-world sound waves.
- Digital
- A discrete signal made of separate values that can be stored as binary.
- Sampling
- Measuring the amplitude of a sound wave at regular intervals.
- Amplitude
- The height of a sound wave at a point in time.
- Sample rate
- The number of samples taken each second, measured in hertz (Hz).
- Sample resolution
- The number of bits used to store each sample.
- Analogue-to-digital converter (ADC)
- Hardware that converts an analogue signal into digital data.
